ABOUT ME

I live in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, Australia.

I have over 30 years' experience working as an academic in Australian and South-East Asian universities. Starting with a PhD in linguistics at the University of Sydney, the main focus of my teaching and research has been on the use of the English language in various contexts: academic, technical, and organisational/managerial.

In addition to my academic positions in linguistics and then in management/organisational communication, I also worked in university learning centres as an academic literacy specialist for over ten years. During those years, I taught workshops aimed at diverse groups of PhD candidates and Masters students and regularly held individual consultations with writers to help them diagnose the strengths and weaknesses of their texts and to become more effective academic writers. I also frequently collaborated with supervisors from various disciplines to help them support their students' research writing development.

I am very familiar with the research writing stages and processes - from proposal to submission - and with thesis examination requirements. I have expertise in a wide range of research-related academic communications: theses (traditional format, and those including publications), journal articles, book chapters, books, grant applications, research proposals, and research reports. I bring my extensive knowledge and experience to the editing of these documents.

Since 2021, I have devoted myself to academic editing. Supporting masters and HDR research writers, early career academics, as well as more experienced academic researchers to produce their best writing continues to be my passion.

About Me

HOW I WORK

You will receive a quote based on a short sample of your work (no more than 5 pages for a longer manuscript) - this quote will cover both editing and proofreading.

If you accept the quote, we can discuss when you would be likely to send your manuscript to me for editing and I will let you know how much time to allow for the job to be completed.

When your manuscript is ready for editing, you will need to email it to me as a Word Document.

I edit the manuscript using track changes and I also provide comments and queries for you to consider and check when I return the manuscript to you post-editing. If there are any sections of your manuscript that I feel need further work before editing, I will send these back to you to revise while I continue to edit the document.

If you have any further questions or need more guidance after I have returned your edited manuscript, you can email me the relevant revised sentences and excerpts. However, I will not look at the whole manuscript again.

TESTIMONIALS

Dr Martyna Gliniecka, Sociology, PhD (Western Sydney University)

Arlene’s help in bettering my thesis in social sciences has been incredible. I highly recommend her for researchers who are non-native English speakers. I needed some guidance to amplify my voice and make my thesis a better read. Arlene is an excellent editor and has helped me with the grammar, structure, and flow of my writing. My supervisors said the thesis had become a linguistic masterpiece.
